IN AETERNUM was originally founded in 1992 under the name BEHEMOTH. They didn’t release their first album until 1999 and were part of the first wave of Swedish Death / Black Metal bands that, alongside bands like DISSECTION, DAWN or MÖRK GRYNING, created a very specific form of Metal of Death. With elements from melodic Black Metal and traditional Heavy Metal they created a sound that was recognized as born from the cold Scandinavian lands. Some fans also think that bands like early AT THE GATES, DARK TRANQUILLITY and IN FLAMES had a similar approach, but it was the demonic lyrical approach and the more spike-influenced attires that put IN AETERNUM in a bit different overall concept. Now, the band stopped doing music somewhere around 2007, but the fire was still there, thus now in 2026 a new album was created. The style has remained intact, very good melodic Death / Black Metal. IN AETERNUM is a band that I own all of their full-lengths of, so I can tell you that this one is possibly some of their best material. Some of their past albums, while good, at times ended up sounding a bit similar between songs, but not on this one. They still play fast and furious, but when they do more controlled songs, while keeping the dark aura, it shows that time has only benefited in their music. Also, production wise this is very good. The whole sound and especially the drumming, courtesy of Master Perra, who is doing a fantastic job. The last song includes guest vocals by Erik from WATAIN, and even though I don’t have the lyrics at hand, I’m sure they are about fallen warriors in the Metal scene. Also worth mentioning, this is the same line-up since their last album from 20 years ago! If you are a fan of the style, believe me, this is among the best works. www.facebook.com/inaeternumofficial, www.facebook.com/soulsellerrecords
