The very first time I had my hands on this album, was purely by mistake. The cover art was cool looking, but to me the logo was too much like Batman, so I had no idea what to expect. All I knew was, that one of the guys in DISSECTION was involved (it turned out to be John Zwetsloot), but I also knew he was a big Punk fan, so I thought that this would be like a Satanic Punk attack. Well, that’s a bit far from what these guys do, but during the first listen it was like “these guys are completely ripping off early BATHORY, WHIPLASH, DISCHARGE and KREATOR, all of this with a very subtle yet quite present old school Heavy Metal vibe!”. And with a very heavy bass presence to round things up. And actually, I didn’t enjoy it too much at first, because of the blatant copy / paste they were doing. At the time I was looking for original bands and obviously that word and NIFELHEIM does not mix. And you know, that’s actually the best thing. The very simple riffs, crazy vocals and noisy approach, which is way more appropriate for a Punk band than a Metal band, actually works here. I must say that they have always had very good drummers. At just below 30 minutes, it has the right amount of blasphemy and obscenity to enjoy at 666 decibels of power. Defining the band as a morbid Metal band, would be like the closest to what they play. Obviously the main style lies between unholy Black Metal, morbid Death Metal and punky Thrash, using simple and few riffs that just hook you up to damnation, like an angel devouring beast. I still have that original CD which goes for insane prices today, but I also got the vinyl version and some unknown tape version, but thanks to the fine folks at Darkness Shall Rise Productions we will have a quite variety of options, including all those 3 formats. This one is a killer hardcover digibook, that includes exclusive pictures and an interview with Tyrant and Hellbutcher highlighting the corresponding period of the band’s history in a 30-page booklet. Still no lyrics, but we all know that this is all to proclaim the great beast and Steve Harris to dominate the world, so no use for that. And after all these years, yes, this is a classic that probably I don’t mind owning again, just for disturbing the holy ones! www.facebook.com/nifelheim.official, www.facebook.com/darknessshallriseproductions
