This review is about legendary STILLBORN from Sweden and their comeback (from the grave) album "Nocturnals", released by Black Lodge Records on October 27, 2017. A little late, but still current and worthy, I would like to write a few lines about this really really good Gothic / Doom Metal masterpiece. Just in case, you are already familiar with their classic and deathless debut album "Necrospirituals" from 1989 and you are thinking this is their one and only, you could be a little surprised by the fact, that it’s not 1989 anymore and the guys from Gothenburg developed a little further. Which doesn’t mean, that they are sounding like SISTERS OF MERCY or DEAD CAN DANCE nowadays. A very positive fact for all you old school maniacs should be, that the original vocalist Kari Hokkanen (also handling bass duties) returned to the band. Let me tell you, that after this long period of silence, they are still sounding very dusty, musty, doomy and gloomy. All-clear, fellows. "Nocturnals" is not a simple replica of the debut, but a very good current statement, how Gothic / Doom Metal with a hard rocking edge should sound these days. That’s why I wouldn’t call "Nocturnals" an old school package exclusively. Even followers of PARADISE LOST and ENTOMBED could like the sound of STILLBORN. Then they might realize, who had a huge impact on these two bands’ sound in the past and maybe still today. In my opinion all the songs on "Nocturnals" are very strong and most of them are just brilliant. It might take you a while to get access to everything what’s going on on this album, but after a couple turns it’s growing and getting better and better. Because there’s many great melodies, hooks and fineness you have to discover little by little. If you are into fast food and in a hurry, please don’t listen to this album. It will take your time and full attention. Then you will become really good friends with this great piece of dark music. I’m still listening to "Nocturnals" almost everyday and can’t get enough of it. Killer. Enjoy!!! \m/ More STILLBORN info at: www.facebook.com/stillbornsweden, label contact: www.blacklodge.se
