It seems pretty obvious that Polish Death / Black satanists STILLBORN had to stretch their debut album so that "Satanas El Grande" clocks in after slightly more than half an hour. A 40 seconds intro and a cover song strongly suggest so. But better short than boring, eh? STILLBORN are quite some speed freaks and their rather old school material jumps at you like a gorilla: fast, powerful and merciless once it really gets mad. Actually, the most impressive feature of these guys is their determination and their goal seems to be not to take any prisoners. But although they don’t forget to vary their pace, I find the record a little monotonous at times because for my taste some of the riffs are slightly too repetative, especially on the opener and on ‘Thousand Faced Bitch’. On the other hand, STILLBORN come up with some really cool solos on the title track and a F-U-C-K-I-N-G heavy part on ‘March Of Armageddon Warriors’. Weird solo on there as well! Finally, STILLBORN’s choice to cover ROTTING CHRIST’s ‘The Sign Of Evil Existence’ is a bit different from the cover tunes one usually expects or even fears and it pretty much sounds like a STILLBORN creation this way, so thumbs up! www.stillborn.prv.pl
