IMPRECATION

One of the first pen-pals I got in underground Metal music was from a Radio Station from Houston, a city that I have always been linked to by my family, and it was also one of the first flyers I received in my first letter while writing to promote bands from my city and a fanzine. None other than Wes Weaver (RIP big guy!) was the man that I sent some tapes from bands I was promoting, and in one of the many travels to Houston I called him and he was kind to play those bands on the radio. A bit later he told me he was now helping a new band from Houston called IMPRECATION and was kind enough to send me a demo of their first recording. He later on become for some time part of the band, but that’s another story. Well, I was fascinated by that demo and have been a fan of the band since then. A quick look at my collection and yes, I got everything they have released so far, and there is a reason for that. They have stayed loyal playing the same kind of music, obviously improving the execution within the pass of time, but very few dare to keep their style intact. Their music is a brutal, sometime semi-technical form of evil satanic Death Metal. My kind of music. And yes, the lyrics have kept evil and blasphemous as they are supposed to be. Vocalist Dave Herrera (the only original member, although he was out of the band for some time) has kept his vision of the band intact since day one. And for a band formed over 30 years ago, this is just their third album. Obviously that in that frame of time many things happen, line-up changes, music trends in the scene, music streaming… you name it. And yet, these purveyors of primordial evil are still going strong. IMPRECATION stands as an institution that goes far beyond band members into a force of unholiness and occult Metal that nowadays has one of the strongest line-ups ever. A release delayed by the pandemic, this is actually the last recording with drummer Ruben Elizondo, who passed away due to that damned virus, yet his legacy is eternal. The basic core of the band can be found in their influences ranging from POSSESSED, BATHORY, MORBID ANGEL and INCANTATION, but then taking them in their own formula, where the sense of impending doom is always present. The music transports me to the days where evil Death Metal was something coming from dark hearts and executed to bring fear into the religious weak hearts on earth. My fave track in here is ‘Forward The Spears’, a diabolic symphony of destruction, that as all the album has a very heavy production showing a band that can blend evil wicked melody in their suffocating sound. Old school extreme Metal fans this is a blind purchase, and newcomers to the evil sounds of damnation, this is your essential dose of darkness and magick to enter the nether realm. Look also for some re-editions of their early material, which is mandatory in any respectable evil Death Metal fan collection!
