Remember the days, when the term "Crossover" wasn’t used to describe nearly any music that mixes two or more styles? When this word didn’t mean lame Rap with distorted guitars or some other wishy washy shit like that? Yes, I mean the glorious times of my youth, when bands like D.R.I., EXCEL, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES or C.O.C. tore down the borders between Hardcore Punk and Thrash Metal, mixing the aggressive riffing of Metal with the intensity and also the awareness of Punk to create a whole new sound that united the extreme – not just musically, but up to a certain point also scene-wise. Well, those days are still alive in the music of N.W.77 (stands for NUCLEAR WEAPON 77), a quite new band from the Brazilian capital Brasília. The up to now only digitally available EP "Doomsday Countdown" marks the debut release of this five-piece. And it definitely sounds like 1987, quite anachronistic and to most pretty outdated. But to those who know, these guys are a fountain of youth. The introduction and the style of shouting in the opener ‘The Living Corpse’ let me think of the mighty BEYOND POSSESSION (one of the gems of these times), ‘Voices In My Head’ grooves like old NUCLEAR ASSAULT and ‘Fatal Blast’ might have been recorded and forgotten by D.R.I. for their classic, genre-defining album "Crossover". With the stop-and-go Thrasher ‘Frustration’ we also find a short song, typical for the style. And ‘Lured By Greed’ reminds of ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT, while ‘Cry For Justice’ even has a certain influence of Industrial Hardcore heroes LARD in the beginning. If my words and the continuous name-dropping sound like N.W.77 have no own ideas, let me tell you that this is not really true. On one hand, N.W.77 are definitely not a band to re-invent classic Crossover, but on the other hand they are a band that brings back an old and forgotten style of music. And that’s a reason to praise "Doomsday Countdown" for what it is – a journey back in time.
