UNGOD
Conquering What Once Was Ours
(Kneel Before The Master's Throne Records)
40:20min

UNGOD has always been the type of band I was somewhat aware of during early 90s but never really made a strong impression for whatever reason. Checking back their stuff after many years make me realize that this MLP (extended to full-length on this re-release) actually stand on its own with quality material. The songs of the original release now flow unbelievably good on my headphones and they feel like an evocation to the old gods like CELTIC FROST, BATHORY, MAYHEM, GOATLORD and things in that vein. I’m really fond of the doomish, bleak and hopeless vibe that these songs transmit and how the band managed to spice it up with a raw but astonishingly good performance. Not sure if there are so much sound improvement compared to the original version due to my blurry remembrance but what I can assure you is that this is filthy, loud and in your fucking face! My biggest complain lies in the fact that the bonus rehearsal tracks are nothing but inferior quality versions of the original tracks found on the MLP. It is always nice to get some extra value for your money getting demo, 7"EP or even completely unreleased stuff and UNGOD has a plenty of that stuff which is very hard to come across and would have been a great addition to the package but unfortunately it did not happen for this release. Nevertheless, this is a piece of German underground Black Metal history that can be considered a classic and the spark that ignited many current bands on the genre.
