New Jersey Death Metal veterans FUNEBRARUM have finally returned after a decade long hiatus since last releasing any new material and 17 years since their last full-length album was released to the masses. The band started cranking out demos around 2000 and have had several line-up changes in their 26+ year existence. Daryl Kahan and company have signed up with Pulverized Records (in coalition with Morbid Wrath Records) to unleash 10 tracks of devastating blistering anthems titled “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence” with a run time of just under 50 minutes. Let’s dive in and check out this slab of musical mayhem. The first track is an intro, but then things really take off with ‘Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence’, the title track of the album. Over five minutes of intensity that starts off slow and quickly crescendos into pure insanity. Guttural vocals and blasting beats with heavy thick guitars. The tone is catchy, gets one’s head moving and the drums steamroll through the madness. The entire album is chuck full of sick guitar solos and hooks especially on ‘Through The Barren Halls Of Grieving Emptiness’. There is so much controlled chaos on that song that you can’t help but hit repeat. Shout out to both Sam Osborne and Phil Tougas for the kickass riffs. This entire album kind of reminds me a bit of DEMILICH mixed with INCANTATION / early GRAVE and a hint of IMMOLATION. The band really does a good job of blending fast paced and slow tempos throughout each track. The longest track on this album ‘The Whispering Cathedral’ also happens to be my favorite as it incorporates all the elements the band brings together in a solid performance here. Other bangers that had me replay were, ‘Sa Nagba Amāru’ and ‘Turning The Stones Of Torment’. You can’t go wrong with any of the tracks here, it’s a really well done and produced album in my opinion. These guys have not lost a step in the 10 years since they dished out new material and this album clearly illustrates the band has a solid formula in hand. All tracks here are killer and no filler, you will not be disappointed by this album and it will easily make any Death Metal diehard’s list of must-check out albums of 2026. If you liked any of their previous works then you know what these guys bring to the table and excel at. I highly recommend this album and would also recommend you check out their previous material if you haven’t already done so. Believe it or not: FUNEBRARUM are back. Ten years after their last release (the EP “Exhumation Of The Ancient”) and 17 years (!) after their last full-length album “The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams” in 2009, the New Jersey based five-piece indulges their loyal fans with a new album. Well, not that new, as “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence” was already recorded seven years ago but not released until this year. Why it took them so long is only guesswork, maybe it was that damn virus, maybe it’s due to the fact that most of the members are also active in other bands as well. Daryl Kahan, the vocalist and last remaining original member, revived his old Hardcore band CITIZENS ARREST (listen to their album “Colossus”, it’s a killer), for example. All this guessing aside, it’s good to have them back, as their prior releases were finest old school underground Death Metal with a damn fine dose of Doom Death. And that is the path FUNEBRARUM take again with their new album. Starting off with the epic intro piece ‘The Arrival’, the following title track already slays with it’s slow entrance riff and a subsequent aggravation with blasting beats and annihilating guitar riffs just to pull the brake in the middle part, making way for a lethal mid tempo section. Thus this song already shows the main characteristic and the striking quality of “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence”: the ultimate variation of speed from morbid and doomy slow motion to blasting high speed close to Grindcore, with unforeseeable twists and turns. Garnished with growling and guttural vocals, decent harmonies and atmospheric roller coaster rides, this album is not for those with a weak heart. But if you’re ready for some morbid stuff, songs like the already praised title track, ‘Sa Nagba Amāru’, the obliterating ‘From Rotting Burial Shrouds’ or the massive finish ‘The Whispering Cathedral’ will surely please you. New Jersey’s marshlands have long concealed one of America’s best Death Metal acts. Formed in 2000, FUNEBRARUM forged and delivered a sound that deeply steeped in early ’90s acts like INCANTATION, IMMOLATION and SADISTIC INTENT. Their debut, “Beneath The Columns Of Abandoned Gods”, remains a cavernous and monolithic classic of the genre. After 2009’s excellent “The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams”, the band entered an extended hibernation. Now, after 17 long years of absence, they finally awake again to unleash their third full-length, “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence”. The band is now operating with a revamped line-up, and in this latest record delivers a total of 10 tracks, lengthening close to 50 minutes. The title track starts with an overlong, moody intro before shifting into core pummeling and blasting force. Here, classic ’90s Death Metal gallops surfaces amid stretches of slow doomy slogs and hyper blasts. Newish axe Sam Osbourne (ex – UNDERGANG) joins guitar wizard Phil Tougas in dropping classic death leads, while Charles Koryn (ASCENDED DEAD) supplies an impressive and steady battering of devastating drum fills. At the forefront, vocalist Daryl Kahan (ex – DISMA) remains a true throat terror, shaking the ground with his abhorrent and repellent croaks. What has sets FUNEBRARUM apart from their standard contemporaries in their past releases is their exceptional songwriting skills that reeks atmospheres of netherworld. That similarity also found in this record thorough tracks like ‘Into Dark Domains’ and ‘Anhela Odor Mortuorum (The Adepts)’. Here they offered nods to the foundational records like “Onward To Golgotha” and early CARCASS, with injecting Finnish style somber grooves and an inexplicable element of pure menace. The devastating ‘From Rotting Burial Shrouds’ conducts an immediately satisfying devastation that stands as an absolute highlight of the record. However, at the ending numbers, it felt like the record suffers from blots. ‘Turning The Stones Of Torment’ stops to keep the momentum and later the nine minute finale, ‘The Whispering Cathedral – Epilogue’ also feels underwhelming, as if the band tried to drag a bit too much by the end. Furthermore, while Tougas’s guitar work is spectacular, some of his fretboard gymnastics sometimes shifted the vibe toward melodic Death, making the atmosphere feel slightly less rancid and diseased compared to their legendary past releases. Ultimately, while “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence” might not entirely touch the morbid heights of their past discography, yet it can offer a robust Death Metal experience for patient death heads. Phil Tougas and his new co. still have some disgusting tricks up their sleeves. So, give this a loud blast and then revisit their early material post haste. After ten years of silence from their previous EP “Exhumation Of The Ancients”, the New Jersey Death Metal giants FUNEBRARUM are back with their third full-length album, released in three formats by three well known underground labels: CD by Pulverised, vinyl by Doomentia and tape by Morbid Wrath. “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence” is a breath of fresh air in a global Death Metal scene that continues to offer monotonous clones of the old school sound, too repetitive and mostly composed without the right creative phlegm. Daryl Kahan and the rest of the band haven’t changed their traditional recipe, erected upon a skilful blend of old school American Death Metal with a doomy touch in the vein of INCANTATION, DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY, DISMA etc. and obscure Finnish bands like DEMIGOD, DEMILICH, ABHORRENCE and FUNEBRE. There’s also a strong vibe of raw, sick and brutal Death Metal in the vein of early ROTTREVORE, PHLEGM and DETERIOROT, to which is added an intense dose of gloomy and mournful keyboard / synth parts that give to the whole album a darkened, spectral and epic touch. Killer drumming by Charlie Koryn, a titan in orchestrating the rhythmic base between furious accelerations, d-beat assaults, double bass passages and more meditative slow sections. Glorious growlings by Kahan, who shares the throne of deep vocals with legendary names such as Craig Pillard and Will Rahmer. Very rewarding the intertwined and ultra-downtuned guitar patterns that are able to convey the obscure and wintery aura well represented by the cover artwork. “Beckoning The Void Of Eternal Silence” is a triumphant example of top quality abyssic Death Metal: very heavy, dynamic, barbaric, funereal and contemplative at the same time. An extra point goes to the blackened pathos ensured by the symphonic insertions in the songwriting. Undoubtedly, FUNEBRARUM have released another Death Metal masterpiece, a worthy successor to “Beneath The Columns Of Abandoned Gods” and “The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams”. Last but not least, this album was recorded in 2019 with additional recordings made subsequently; a magnum opus that sweeps away the majority of the old school Death Metal albums released in the last seven years. www.facebook.com/funebrarumofficial, www.facebook.com/pulverisedrecords
