The first and last thing that strikes me with this album is that it is outdated. You just know you’ve heard this numerous times before, naming bands such as Unleashed, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Dismember and, ahem, Grave. Of course, if you desperately need other song-titles I guess ‘Last Journey’, ‘Bloodfeast’ and ‘Trial By Fire’ should do something to you, but you won’t find any revolutionary riffs on ‘Fiendish Regression’. This band from Sweden has done its version of Death Metal since the early nineties, and as far as I remember they sounded exactly the same back then. By all means, if you play this loud you get your dose of mid-paced and at times groovy Death Metal, but think of bands that always try to develop I feel that Grave falls behind. This may sounds like I desperately need every new band to be original? Well, wouldn’t that be fantastic? No, of course it wouldn’t because music and genres are also about identity. In that sense I feel that Grave fits perfectly in here. Too bad their songs sound the same and just go on and on without any sing of trying to develop… in any direction. If they don’t do better next time I hope this is their “Last Journey”.
