Reborn In Sin

In case you miss the peculiar sound that bands like ENTOMBED and DISMEMBER were famous for more than ten years ago, you should go for this album without delay as it is a sort of journey through the past. HORRID chose to go for the Sunlight Studio to record their first offering (following their “Blasphemic Creatures” MCD from 1998 – Frank), and they made a good choice doing it I must add. You can’t say that Tomas Skogsberg is the hot Death Metal producer of the moment, but he certainly did a good job producing “Reborn In Sin” and the result sounds fresh in 2002, especially if you consider of the too predictable sounding albums that plague the records bins worldwide. If you have read the interview already done by Frank, you know that HORRID are fans of the old Stockholm school of Death Metal, but far from being mere copyists, the Italians adapt this style to their own musical vision. It is true that “Reborn In Sin” reminds me of “Like An Ever Flowing Stream” more than once, but HORRID combine low-tuned Death Metal with lots of melodies and a sort of progressive edge. Each of the songs are complex, with numerous rhythm changes, the band give enough room to melody and a melancholic touch is often added to the anger of the whole. My only minor criticism comes from the fact the band sometimes lose their focus, trying to incorporate too many ideas into one song, but anyway the result sounds sufficiently interesting to come over that. To sum it up, a very convincing first full length, very promising. Like I said before, a must for all DISMEMBER fans, but keep in mind that HORRID pay tribute to their influences without simply reproducing a worn-out formula. Strongly recommended.
