Some weeks ago, German Death Metal force OBSCURE INFINITY released a split 7” with WOUND as a kind of appetizer for their upcoming new album. And now “Perpetual Descending Into Nothingness” is here to hit your stereo, for your listening pleasure. And the pleasure of your neighbors as well, since this is Metal of fuckin’ Death, and it’s meant to be played loud! What does the third strike of OBSCURE INFINITY has to offer? Finest Death Metal of the old school, mainly rooted in the vein of the old European heroes. But some influences of the US school are either present in the music of this five piece from the famous Westerwald. But “Perpetual Descending Into Nothingness” is very very far from being a copy of some known band. OBSCURE INFINITY is a band that already found a sound of their own in early days. And once they found their way, they just refined their style. The main ingredient of their style is their elaborate songwriting, rather complex structures meet a not too technical way of playing. To round it all down, OBSCURE INFINITY add a heavy dose of melodies to their sound, as well as the one or other Thrash inspired guitar riff. A fine and unique album is the result. As usual, OBSCURE INFINITY opens up their full length with an intro, before ‘Sorcery Of The Black Souls’ starts off in a furious manner. But that’s of course not the end of joy. One great songs follows the other, be it the damn cool ‘Expiration Of The Lost’, ‘The Uttermost Descend’ with its great melodies or ‘A Forlorn Wanderer’ that surprises with an epic middle part. With ‘Into The Undertow’ we have a skull splintering song, that comes along with a solo break in a classic Metal style. The kind of title track ‘Descending Into Nothingness’ is one fine example of the songwriting skills OBSCURE INFINITY have achieved, since this one is not only well-structured, but also spiced with Thrash inspired riffs and another classic Metal guitar solo. With ‘From Odium And Disease’ we have another fast overkill full of breaks and surprising twists and turns – the nearly MALMSTEENesque breaks in the end is very surprising, even for a band that seems to like those classic Metal breaks. But OBSCURE INFINITY have saved their most ambitious song on “Perpetual Descending Into Nothingness” for last. ‘Beyond Spheres And Time’ is a wild ride full of breaks, with a MAIDENesque part and an acoustic break as well as high speed moments close to Black Metal. This one is such diversified, you don’t even recognize that it’s nearly eight minutes long. In short, “Perpetual Descending Into Nothingness” is an album that has enough ideas and details to listen to it over and over again, a bonfire of breaks and surprises and definitely one of the most ambitious albums this year. It might even appeal to those who are not too much into Death Metal.
