Here’s the next coup for the now considerable EP collection that SODOM have been releasing over all the years. And what a masterpiece this is! The new recordings of the really old songs from the demo tapes “Victims Of Death” (1982) and “Witching Metal” (1984) were until today reserved for those who bought the strictly limited and long sold out deluxe box-set of “40 Years At War – The Greatest Hell Of Sodom”. Our nostalgia trip opens with ‘1982’, the band’s latest anthem written by Angelripper and his crew for the 40th anniversary of SODOM last year. This song shows the way which we shall rattle along in the EP’s almost twenty minutes. Anyone out there who remembers the hopelessly overdriven noisy original recordings on “Witching Metal” and the scratchy distortion orgies on the “Victims Of Death” demo? You will suddently get an idea of the meticulousness with which the guitarists Yorck and Blackfire in particular approached the project from the numbers that have now been carefully restored. Not to mention drummer Toni Merkel, who was able to preserve the old Witchhunter spirit in the tracks. SODOM manage to respectfully transform their demo songs into audible sound. ‘Witching Metal’ comes next and after 42 years, ‘Victim Of Death’ is now destined to become a real hit with its doomy bass middle-part with Angelripper’s mysteriously whispered vocals. ‘Let’s Fight In The Darkness Of Hell’, which they have played live for the first time on the Keep It True festival 2023 in the south of Germany and the finishing ‘Equinox’ make the disc or the vinyl edition a must-have as a Sodomaniac. If it had been up to me, the four Sodomists could have been happy to renovate one or two more of those old tracks.
