ANATOMIA are one of my favourite bands! I’ve had the opportunity to co-host them in Bangalore, India. On stage they were simply spell binding, twice as heavy and thrice as venomous. Their latest split with UNDERGANG offers no surprises in terms of the quality of Death Metal that they churn out. ‘Total Darkness’ is your typical 12 minute ANATOMIA track which packs cavernous assault on senses, their music reeks of a pungency that can be best described as hypnotic. They take their time as the prisoner walking to her death row. One step at a time, slowly, grudging in agony and finally in torment of self and the situation. I wonder what does such music do a first time listener of traditional Death Metal? Although all my answers converge onto a singular point, I’d like an alternative view to understand what does such muddiness and rawness come across as. All in all, ANATOMIA takes you through a life time of darkness in the first part of this split. Like old school German Thrash and old school Swedish Death Metal, ANATOMIA envelopes their delivery in cold, dark, evil that can be felt right from the get go! UNDERGANG has been the old school fan’s wet dream for quite some time now. There was a time where I could put together the entire timeline of Danish Death Metal but sadly that part of my brain is now defunct. UNDERGANG stick to their guns and deliver a traditionally strong slice of Death Metal on this split that can simply be part of mid-to-late 90s. Their solos and the atmosphere give ANATOMIA a run for their money. ‘I Dit Stiveste Pus’ is a great example which covers all strengths of the band with relative ease. I mean, I don’t necessarily have to go through their side of the split song by song because we all know the drill. I quite enjoyed this split, highly recommended! Get a copy!
