Back in the good old Metal days, during the mid eighties, the Brazilian Metal scene was flourishing with bands, that never really came out over the borders. We of course have bands like SEPULTURA, SARCOFAGO and VULCANO and the likes who all conquered the world, and still continue to do, with their legacy and a couple of them with new recordings as well. Heavy Discos Records or Heavy Records started releasing music in 1984 and had a good dozen of releases, before the label folded. Though it seems like it still roams the netherworld, in some incarnation these days, as this compilation of music from its heyday, has seen the light of day. DORSAL ATLANTICA was the most profiled band back then, they did five full length albums and an EP on the label, and a band that still is active today! They are delivering a quite thrashy blend of speedy Metal, some epic Heavy Metal parts and aggressive and profound crossover. They have quite some hooking basal riffing and rhythm patterns. My favorite track on this compilation is ‘Blue Heart’ by X-RATED, a quite quiet Heavy Metal infused track, with a great feel, a good acoustic guitar main riff, some soulful vocals, a quite hooking tune, though I can’t find much info about the band and their whereabouts. CALIBRE 38 churns out some chunky Heavy Metal with some great guitar work, great classic riffing, good leads and a blistering solo, and the vocals do good as well, great catchy Heavy Metal, that shows that METAL CHURCH did make a huge impact with their first two releases. This compilation is a nice and raw blast from the past from eight different bands, from when music was all about intensity and feel, and not so much about clean productions, a certain direction nor the best vocal skills, but it was all beat to work, perhaps the band was the next to get a breakthrough and some fame. But of course a good bunch of these bands on here never really made it back then, though have quite a quality today. That should give us some food for thought.
